Translation in general refers to all means of conveying a message, written or spoken, from one language to another. It can be divided into:

  • written translation, known simply as translation
  • interpreting, the translation of a spoken message; also sometimes called oral translation
  • sign-language interpreting, the translation of any spoken language into any signed language


Interpreting, as the translation of a spoken message, can be divided generally into two modes:

  • Consecutive Interpreting, where the Interpreter speaks after the Speaker
  • Simultaneous Interpreting, where the Interpreter speaks at almost the same time as the Speaker, and the Audience listens to the Interpreter through headsets
